Hospital Pharmacist, educator is the Chapter's next Skipper CEBU CITY (21 September 2009) -- A party-animal whose interests after and beyond work were gimmicks, hang-outs and out-of-town adventures had never thought he would one day shift to pursuing things truly worthwhile and relevant.
He even joined Junior Chamber International (JCI) Cebu-Mactan Channel in January 2006 and became a charter member seeing the organization more as a new source of new friends to enjoy life with. Marlon Ariel L. Polinar never had an iota of thought that in four years after he allowed himself to step into the world of JCI he would lead the chapter as President for 2010.
Curious The chapter had just started building blocks when Dr. Rio R. de la Peña brought Marlon to the 3rd GMM in January 2006 when the members reviewed and ratified the local Constitution. It was 2009 President Emi Rose "MM" R. Parcon who a month earlier brought Doc Rio, her high school batchmate, to the chapter in time for the 2nd GMM in December 2005. President MM also joined just about a month earlier and was among the initial recruits curious about the passion her husband, 2007 President Angelo Daniel, has for the organization. In that January 2006 GMM, President-elect Marlon got curious by the heated debate on the official name of this chapter that he wondered why the fuzz and the arguments on such a simple matter. As he witnessed the name evolve from "Mactan Channel," the addition of "Cebu" and the placement of a hyphen "-" between Cebu and Mactan, it roused his curiousity as he got awed in the manner the discussions were made. "I thought I was watching a Senate session on ANC," he quipped. Little would he know that the proverbial JCI bug began to bit him. High gear As projects and activities came to pass and as he swore as a JCI member during the Charter Presentation and 1st Induction Ceremonies on Feb. 11, 2006, Marlon found his new home. He readily accepted the challenge to serve as Individual Development Commissioner under the leadership of the 2006 Charter President, Cerwin T. Eviota, CNT (NG). After the expanded Vanguard Leaders Course he undertook overnight in a private beach-front property the Charter President conducted, Marlon shifted to high gear in his JCI involvement. In just eight months, his involvement transcended to commitment as he ran for the Board of Directors (BOD) to serve as Secretary-General in 2007, the chapter's sophomore year under President Gelo. By 2008, he served as Vice President for Development under 2008 President Jolex Yu Lim, CLT, then as VP for Administration this year under President MM. Over these years, the party animal was leading and orchestrating projects, making things happen for the chapter, handling the major and heavy projects. He attended the National Conventions of 2006 in Subic, 2007 in Cebu and 2008 in Dipolog, and the Area Conferences of 2006 in Cebu, 2007 in Catbalogan, 2008 in Bacolod and 2009 in Mandaue. The awards Marlon raked in speak well of his achievements: - 2006 - One of the 10 Outstanding Members (Presidential Award)
- 2007 - Most Outstanding Project Chairman in the Visayas
- 2007 - Most Outstanding Member (Presidential Award)
- 2008 - Most Outstanding Officer (Presidential Award)
- 2008 - Outstanding Officer of the Month (October)
- 2009 - Outstanding Officer of the Month (January)
New horizons With the blessings of his chapter, Marlon accepted the responsibility to serve as 2009 Regional Secretary-General under National Vice President Donato Gonzalez, an avenue that opened more his horizons beyond the chapter. Soon, 2009 National EVP Carlo Pontico C. Fortuna and 2009 Visayas Area Conference Director Barbara Cabo noted how reliable and responsible Marlon is that both chose to appoint him Deputy Conference Director. On several occasions during the recent 29th Visarcon, NEVP Fortuna openly declared during the opening ceremonies, in the plenary sessions and awarding that Marlon was: "The man who kept the Areacon wheels turning. (He is) the most trustworthy man I have ever met."
But Marlon gives back the credit to the chapter. "JCI Cebu-Mactan Channel molded me to what I have now become," he declared. Indeed, Marlon has come of age, now ripe to lead the chapter as its 5th President carrying the challenge to best the records of his predecessors and mentors. Medical Sciences But who is Marlon outside JCI? Born on March 24, 1979 in Surigao City with Spanish blood running in his veins, Marlon has been a Hospital and Clinical Pharmacist over the past seven years. Doctors rely on him in the adminiustration of drugs and medicines for the patients of Cebu Doctors University Hospital. As he handles Pharmacy Training and Development for the hospital, he also serves as secretary of the Medication Management Committee. Since he exhibited traits he got from JCI training in 10 months by November 2006, the University took him in its core of professors for the College of Pharmacy and has been serving as an Educator. He had so much energy that he even doubled as a Call Center Agent in the last quarter of 2006 for an experimental project of Focus Interactive Outsourcing Corp. Marlon graduated elementary at Surigao City Pilot School in 1992, and finished high school at Surigao del Norte National High School in 1996. He migrated to Cebu to study Pharmacy and earned his Bachelor's Degree at Southwestern University (SWU) in 2001 and has since been a resident of Cebu. His got his first job in October 2001 as Management Trainee of La Botica in Ayala Center Cebu that he eventually served as Pharmacist until he joined CDU Hospital in March 2002. At 30, Marlon, as most JCI members are in this age, thirsts for learning that he gets by doing in JCI and while taking now a Masteral Degree in Teaching Medical Related Sciences at the new CDU campus in New Mandaue City. 1st Bachelor CEO As he assumes as the next Chief Executive Officer of this chapter, he will be the first bachelor to serve in the position in four years as a JCI chapter. He would certainly have "M.E.T." what is needed in such role -- a bit of Money to spare, enough Energy and more importantly lots of Time -- than his married predecessors. And yes, he is still a party animal!
